We are absolutely and totally in love with our new precious bundle and Eric couldn't be more excited to have his baby brother here!

In honor of Ryan being one week old today, I thought I'd finally put some time in at the computer to write out the "birth story". (I've had a lot of requests since I mentioned that there was "no time" for an epidural)...Oh and it's long...sorry!
Last Wednesday, I went in for my normal OB check up. I, of course, told her that I was so uncomfortable and so ready to have this baby. I'm sure she hears the same thing from every other woman in the world that is close to their due date but I felt it was worth a shot at trying to get some sympathy from her. I had even planned on trying to turn on the "water works" if necessary but to my surprise she said after checking me, "Well, you are dilated to a 3 and you are actually past the 39 week mark so, I'll go ahead and strip your membranes." She continued to tell me that sometimes it doesn't work so I should try not to get my hopes up, yada yada....I tuned this part out because I was so excited!! I had my membranes stripped with Eric and he was born 7 hours later, so I knew this would work. I left the office in great spirits and called Jene to warn him that I might be calling him to come home in the next couple of hours.
When I got home, I started to do some last minute cleaning and cooking (yes, this was the day I made a HUGE batch of caramel corn and posted about it on FB.) and packing an overnight bag for Eric to stay with some friends. I was feeling very crampy but nothing too intense and definitely not having regular contractions for most of the morning. Around 12:30, I started to contract. Again, nothing super painful at all and not too close together but I called Jene and told him we'd probably have to go to the hospital soon and he should come home now. When Jene got home, I was still not hurting really bad like I remember hurting with Eric before going to the hospital. So, we laid on the couch watching a movie with Eric all while timing contractions at the same time. This part of the day was super bittersweet to me. I knew it was the last time it would be just the 3 of us and I wanted to soak it all in and in a way never let that moment go. I couldn't take my eyes off of Eric and my heart was filled with love for my little boy that didn't seem to be so little any more....precious moments, **sigh**.... Anyway, about an hour goes by and I'm having contractions about every 5 minutes, so we packed up the truck, dropped Eric off with friends and off to the hospital we went.
Once we got to the hospital, I was almost positive they were going to send us home. I could barely feel the contractions now and they seemed to be getting further apart. After a few minutes they pulled us back to a "triage" area of the maternity ward. Jene and I waited for about 20 minutes before anyone came to see us...meanwhile, my contractions were still barely noticeable and I was bracing myself to be totally embarrassed when they sent me home. Finally, a nurse came back and hooked me up to the machine to monitor the contractions and the baby's heart rate. The nurse is asking all sorts of ridiculous "routine" questions and at the same time she's really watching the monitors closely. I was confused and nervous because I wasn't really feeling much pain but apparently, I should've been by her reactions. After a little bit, the baby's heart started to drop a tad and she had me roll over on my left side. As soon as I did that, my water broke. Which was a new and different experience for me. Now, in my mind once someone's water has broke you would think things would become more urgent but apparently these nurses didn't think it was such a rush in my case. You'd think they'd rush me to a room and get my IV going but they are seriously taking their sweet time. Finally, I get back to a room because obviously, I'm going to have this baby sometime soon and the contractions hit me hard. I mean, really hard! I had told them I wanted an epidural from the beginning to make sure they knew to get my IV going etc...So, they finally get their rears in gear and after a nurse murders my veins trying to get my IV in (seriously, I should take a picture of the bruise. 6 days later and it still looks as black/blue as it did the day it happened) we finally get the IV drip up and going but by this point, I'm dying. I'm squeezing the heck out of Jene's hand, crying and shamelessly begging them for drugs. They told me they couldn't give me anything until I filled out some paperwork. Seriously?! I almost pulled a "Shirley McLaine" moment when I heard this. (if you don't know what a Shirley McLaine moment is, you are missing out). So, Jene filled them out for me and I literally scribbled my name near the line on the paper. They finally inject some drugs into my IV and it makes me really dizzy but it did take the edge off. At this point, they checked me and told me I was at a 6 and 90% effaced. I was totally relieved. I was only a 6 there was time for the IV drip to get into my system and I'd have my epidural and everything would be hunky dory. The nurses even told Jene that this was a good time for him to go down to the truck get the cameras and some dinner for himself. I gave Jene the, "it's ok, go ahead, I'll be fine" schpeal and so he left. Not even 2 minutes after Jene walked out that door, I was in so much pain, I involuntarily screamed. The nurse came in and checked me and said, "Oh, this baby is coming now!" I looked up at her with sheer terror on my face and pure panic in my voice and said, "No epidural?" She just looked at me dead serious and said, "No, this baby is coming now." This was my worst nightmare...no joke! I barely had time to register this before I realized Jene was gone. The next thing out of my mouth was, "My husbands not here!" I gave the nurse his cell number and she called him to come back up. After that, I started screaming again and I needed to push. I didn't want to push but I needed to, bad. There was no trying to hold baby in. The doctor finally came rushing in and was dressing to deliver my baby and I was already pushing him out. My body was spitting this baby out whether the doctor or myself were ready or not. Two nurses were trying to lift my legs in the stirrups while I was screaming...which was so bizarre to me. I mean, it was completely involuntary. From my perspective, I must have looked like a scene straight out of the Exorcist or something awful! I kept apologizing to the nurses and doctor for screaming because I truly wasn't meaning to. I'm sure the women in the rooms next door were freaking out. Anyway, three pushes later and he was out! I was completely shocked and amazed at how fast it was. They laid him on my stomach and I immediately grabbed his little hand and he wrapped his hand so tight around my finger, it was so sweet!
A minute later, guess who comes walking in the delivery room...Jene. He had missed the entire thing. He was so confused! He walked into a room with about 10 people in it and he saw the umbilical cord and was like, "Wait, where's the baby?" Then he saw that Ryan was laying on me and he was shocked. We both have mixed feelings about him missing the actual birth. On the one hand, I wish he would've been there just to tell me what it was like from his perspective and on the other hand, I'm glad he wasn't there because I was screaming and scared and I didn't want him to feel bad, helpless or to freak out. He feels the same way. When they saw how baffled Jene was the doctor and nurses said I went from a 6 to a 10 in two minutes. Is that even possible?! It made for a very speedy delivery which almost made the lack of epidural worth it...almost. From the time my water broke to Ryan laying on my tummy was a grand total of 1 hour. Ryan was just ready to make his grand entrance to the world and boy oh boy was it some entrance!
